Taking Screenshots In Windows Mobile 5.0 Powered Pocket PC.

19 September 2007

I own a HP iPAQ rx1950 which is powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0.

Unfortunately, there is no equivalent PrintScreen Key provided by default either by Software or Hardware.

After a little search on google, I could find a free(as in free beer or Gratis)utility which when installed on iPAQ would serve my purpose. It is Ilium Software Screen Capture

These are the steps to install the software on the HP iPAQ.

  1. Install Microsoft ActiveSync on your Windows XP System.
  2. Connect your device using the USB cradle provided.
  3. ActiveSync will detect your device and displays the status as Connected.
  4. Connected

  5. Download ScreenCapture-WinMobile-Setup.exe from here.
  6. Install ScreenCapture-WinMobile-Setup.exe on the PC on which you have ActiveSync Installed.
  7. Follow the on screen instructions that are displayed when you double click ScreenCapture-WinMobile-Setup.exe
  8. After a few seconds, the insallation will be done on your Pocket PC. You will be asked if you trust this publisher and you would like to continue. Press Yes.
  9. If you have a storage card installed into your Pocket PC, you’ll be asked the location of installation.
Choose storage card and tap the Install button at the bottom on the Pocket PC.
  10. The application will be installed.

You can view it by tapping Start -> Programs

Taking ScreenShots

  1. Open Screen Capture utility. By default the key used to take screenshot is App1. For HP iPAQ rx1950, it is the calendar key at the bottom. It is also the first key.
  2. Menu Options

  3. Once Screen Capture is running, by choosing Menu -> Options you can change the Key binding if you prefer other keys.
  4. Options Key

  5. You can assign any of the total keys available physically on your device from App1…App6.
  6. Options Key Change

  7. Open the application of which you want to take screenshot. As you can see I’ve opened Start->Programs and highlighted Screen Capture
  8. Screen Capture

  9. Press the capture key.
  10. You will hear the sound of a camera click and the captured image will be stored in My Documents Folder on your Pocket PC.

You can either view it on the device or transfer to PC using ActiveSync.
