Convert DVD to mp4 using HandBrake
24 October 2007What is the simplest way to convert your DVDs to mp4 which you can later watch on your ipod?
The answer is Handbrake
HandBrake is an open-source software to convert DVDs to mpeg-4. To know its complete details have a look here.
The latest version available is 0.9.1.
Here are the step-by-step instructions to set-it-up on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4).
- Download HandBrake from here. Once downloaded, complete the installation by following the on screen instructions.
- Start HandBrake from Applications
- Insert the DVD which you want to rip into the DVD drive
- Press the Source button at the top-left.This will open a dialog box, where from the left pane, select the DVD. Then press the Open button.
- It will read the DVD and display all information about it such as the number of chapters, duration etc.
- From the Presets slider at the right, select iPod Low-Rez
- Change the name of the output file to something meaningful and then from the main window press Start.
Depending upon the processing power, it will take some time to finish the encoding. On my Mac OS X, it took about an hour. Once it is done, it will display a message that it has finished encoding.
Now you can copy your mp4 file to ipod and watch it.
That’s all. Easiest way to convert DVDs to mp4 without any hassles.
